Passport matters
Validity, renewal and what to do if it's lost
Your passport is issued and renewed by your own country. The points below are general guidance; for exact rules ask your country's mission.
- 1
Watch the expiry date
In the TRNC a residence permit is issued for 60 days less than your passport's validity. If your passport is about to expire, your permit will be short too.
- 2
Renew early
Renewal is done by your country's mission and can take time. Apply a few months before it expires.
- 3
Keep a copy
Keep a photo of your passport and permit on your phone and in your email; it makes things easier if they are lost.
- 4
If it's lost or stolen
First report it at the nearest police station in the area where you lost it. Then ask your country's mission for a new passport or an emergency travel document. If you have a residence permit, also ask the Immigration Department what to do.
Missions
Türkiye is the country with an embassy in North Cyprus. Most other embassies are in the south of the island, in Nicosia; the rules for crossing to the south depend on your nationality, so call the mission before you go.
