5 traps waiting for newcomers in Cyprus

Agency, housing, job and debt traps

  1. 1

    Fake agencies

Beware of agencies promising "you'll study while working there" or "guaranteed full scholarship". Confirm scholarships and job options directly on the university's official website and with its student office.

  2. 2

    Fake landlords

"Landlords" who want a deposit before you see the place, rush you or won't sign a contract. Read the renting guide before you send money.

  3. 3

    Fake job ads

Job offers that ask for money first, or collect a "work permit fee". If an employer asks you for money before you've worked, it isn't a job.

  4. 4

    Never hand over your passport

Whoever it is (a lender, employer or landlord), don't leave your passport as security. If your passport is taken, report it to the police.

  5. 5

    "Easy money" offers

Offers to let someone use your bank account, or to receive or send money for someone else, can make you a criminal.

Spotted a trap? Report it and protect the next newcomer.
