Renting in Cyprus without getting scammed

How to find a place without getting scammed

Renting is where newcomers to the island lose the most money. Cash up front, fake landlords, deposits that never come back... Don't send anyone money before reading this page.

Costs to expect

  • Landlords often ask for several months' rent up front, one month's agent commission and one month's deposit.
  • Rent is usually asked in British pounds.
  • Ask for the total amount at the start so there are no surprises.

Stop if you see these signs

  • They want a deposit before you've seen the place.
  • They rush you: "someone else wants it, send it now".
  • They don't want a contract.
  • Money is asked in cash or to a stranger's account.
  • The price is far below other homes in the area.

Before you pay

  • See the place yourself.
  • Ask for the landlord's ID and proof that the home is really theirs.
  • Sign a written contract, and have it state when and on what terms the deposit is returned.
  • Get a receipt for every payment.
  • Photograph the electricity and water meters so it's clear which debts are whose.
  • Take dated photos of any damage in the home.

If you've been scammed

  • Keep proof of payment.
  • File a complaint with the police.
  • If you're a student, tell your school's student office.
  • Report it to us on the "Complaint" page so others are warned.
